LANDOVER, Md. – The Norfolk State women's track and field team had several top-10 finishes as they took sixth place at the 2008 MEAC Indoor Championship on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The freshmen continued their season-long success, but unexpected injuries knocked out two of NSU's top newcomers. Ashleigh Joseph (Chesapeake, Va.) suffered an injury prior to the start of the meet and Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) was hurt while participating in one of Friday's events.

Freshman Candace Shoates (Newport News, Va.) had the Spartans' only first-place finish, as she won the pole vault after clearing 8-2¾. Freshman Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) finished third in both the mile (5:12.82) and the 3000 meters (10:41.03), and helped the distance medley relay team to a third place finish in a season-best 12:00.65.

NSU got a fifth place finish from freshman Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) in the long jump (17-11¾) and a pair of  sixth place finishes from junior Sasha Wilson (West Columbia, S.C.) in the shot put (41-10½) and She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) in the high jump (5-2½).

Some of the Spartans' other top-10 finishes came from sophomore Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.) in the mile (9th, 5:24.78) and the 3000 meters (7th, 10:48.99), junior Portia Davenport (Dale City, Va.) in the 60 meters (8th, 7.78), and freshman Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) in the long jump (8th, 17-10¼).

“Our freshmen had a good showing,” head coach Ronda Berard said. “They stepped up in the face of adversity and once everyone is healthy, we will be ready for the outdoor season.”
