DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Norfolk State Women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive match and improved to 2-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with a 5-2 win over Bethune-Cookman Friday morning at the City Island Tennis Complex.
NSU (4-3, 2-0 MEAC) took an early lead by winning the doubles point. Fiorella Valdivia (Lima, Peru) and Stepanka Velebova (Tachov, Czech Republic) won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Lerissa Morris (Kingstown, SVG) and Jennifer Astbury (Chesapeake, Va.) blanked Reijina Hopkins and Melanie Cheatham 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.
Bethune-Cookman (3-9, 1-2 MEAC) wasted no time in winning the first two singles matches, but the Spartans swept Nos. 3-6 singles to take the match. Morris (No. 3) defeated Jeneice Ward 6-3, 6-3 and Velebova beat Chantera Brown 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Astbury and Ashlee Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) did not drop a game at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. 
The Spartans take on reigning MEAC Champion South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C. on Saturday at 1 p.m.
