Final Results
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) tied for first place and freshman Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) finished third in third in the long jump to lead the Norfolk State women's track team in their season opener at the Wake Forest Open.
Kirby jumped 19 feet, 1 ½ inches, while Brown reached a mark of 18-8. Junior Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) was the Spartans' third finisher in the long jump (17-6 ¾).
Sophomore Alyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) and freshmen Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.) and She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) all posted top-10 finishes in their respective events. Pickett finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.41. Sanford ran a 24.69 to finish 10th in the 200 meters and Mitchell cleared 5-2 ¼ in the high jump (seventh place).
Sanford and Pickett also led the Spartan runners in the 400 meters, recording times of 57.75 and 1:00.07, respectively.
Faulkner, one of the Spartan's most versatile athletes, also competed in the shot put (38-9 ½) and javelin (88-7) and qualified for the 100-meter hurdles by running a 14.93 in the preliminaries.
Freshman Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) continued to lead NSU in the distance races. She ran a 2:14.85 in the 800 meters and a 4:50.97 in the 1500. Sophomore Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.) finished second for the Spartans in those events, running 2:20.27 and 4:58.45, respectively.
Freshman Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) (13th, 36-6 ¼) and Brown (15th, 35-11 ¼) were the Spartans' top finishers in the triple jump. In the shot put, junior Sasha Wilson (West Columbia, S.C.) hit a mark of 38-6 ¾ and was followed by Brown who reached 37-2 ¼.
Alyce Harrell (Columbia, Md.), another first-year Spartan, finished 14th in the discus with a throw of 128-8. Wilson tied for 17th with a mark of 121-5 and freshman Tiphani Harris (Chesapeake, Va.) hit 103-10.
The Spartans head to Raleigh, N.C. to take part in the Raleigh Relays. Competition begins on Friday.
