ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman pitchers Hiram Burgos, Joseph Munoz and Joseph Gautier combined to limit Norfolk State to eight hits as the Wildcats swept a doubleheader from the Spartans, 10-1 and 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
The losses snap a six-game win streak for NSU (13-12, 3-5 MEAC).
Burgos (5-1) allowed just three hits and one unearned run in seven innings to take the win in game 1, with Munoz pitching two scoreless innings of relief to finish off NSU. Burgos walked none and struck out eight. Gautier (3-1) tossed a five-hit shutout over seven frames, striking out six in the nightcap.
Drew Clark was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI for the first-place Wildcats (21-13, 8-0). Jose Ortiz was 4-for-9 and hit a solo homer in game 1 for B-CU.
Joey Seal (Newport News, Va.) and Ryan Wiggins (Hayes, Va.) were both 2-for-6 on the afternoon for NSU and were the only Spartans with a hit in each game. Joyce extended his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games.
In the opener, B-CU scored three times in the second and three more in the third to get off to a quick start against NSU starter Joey Seal (Newport News, Va.). Clark had the last of four straight singles to open the second inning, driving in two runs. Neal Jones had an RBI single and Emmanuel Castro a sac fly in the third.
Ortiz homered in the fourth to give B-CU a 7-0 lead.
NSU got its lone run in the seventh inning. Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Va.) reached on a two-out Wildcat error and scored on Joyce's double to right-center off Burgos.
Seal (4-3) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and nine runs, eight earned, in six innings. He struck out five.
In game 2, Gautier out-dueled NSU right hander Quinn Bright (Virginia Beach, Va.). Bright (3-4) tossed his second complete game of the year, allowing nine hits and three runs in six innings. He fanned four.
B-CU scored twice in the second off Bright. Clark reached on an infield single and scored when Bright's throw was errant when fielding Patrick Jones' bunt single. Jones then scored on a single by Ortiz. Aaron Patterson added an RBI single in the sixth for the Wildcats' other run.
NSU looks to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon when the teams conclude their series at 1 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach.
