South Carolina State Ends Spartans’ Run for MEAC Title

Morris, Daugherty Named to All-Tournament Team

RALEIGH, N.C. – The South Carolina State women's tennis team won its fourth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title with a 4-0 defeat of Norfolk State on Sunday at the Millbrook Tennis Center.

With the win, the Lady Bulldogs received an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Women's Championship. Team selections will be announced on ESPNews on Tuesday, April 29.

SCSU (13-3) won the doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 3. The tournament's Outstanding Performer Marcela Rodenzo teamed with Mirian Cruz to defeat Fiorella Valdivia (Lima, Peru) and Stepanka Velebova (Tachov, Czech Republic) 8-5 at No. 1. Lerissa Morris (Kingstown, SVG) and Jennifer Astbury (Chesapeake, Va.) fell 8-0 to Sarai Torres and Amy Chen, the No. 3 all-tournament doubles team.

The Lady Bulldogs followed with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and won the match with Daria Sekerina's straight-set defeat of Astbury at No. 5.

The Spartans end the year at 8-5 overall.

Morris and Ashlee Daugherty (Las Vegas, Nev.) were named to the all-tournament team at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively.
