PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Norfolk State freshman Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) recorded a new personal-best for the second weekend in a row in the long jump with a leap of 38 feet, 11 ¾ inches for a 12th-place finish in the college division section at the 2008 Penn Relays.
Sophomore Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) tied for fourth place in the high jump (college division) after clearing an outdoor-best 5-6. Freshman She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) competed in the Eastern division section of the high jump, finishing eighth with a jump of 5-4 ½.
Head coach Ronda Berard was also pleased with the performance of her sprint medley team of Portia Portia Davenport (Dale City, Va.), Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.) Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) and Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.). The team ran in the Championship of America section and finished 14th in 3:59.93.
In the Championship section of the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Alyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) ran a 1:01.90 and senior Rachel Griffin (Newport News, Va.) was the Spartans' second finisher in 1:04.73.
In other college division action, junior Sasha Wilson (West Columbia, S.C.) finished 18th in the shot put with a throw of 41-8 and in the long jump, Kirby reached a mark of 17-11 and freshman Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) hit 17-4 ¼.
The Spartans will head to Baltimore, Md. to compete in the 2008 MEAC Outdoor Championship. The meet, which is hosted by Morgan State, will run from Thursday through Sunday. The women are seeking their first outdoor title since 2001.
