Spartan Women Perform Well at Florida Relays

She'Anna Mitchell Won the Section B High Jump at the Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla.Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) finished 12th in the 1500 meter run and Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.) and Victoria Faulkner set personal records in the 1500 meters and 100-meter hurdles, respectively, as the Norfolk State women's track team turned in several top performances at the Florida Relays hosted by the University on Florida.

She'Anna Mitchell (Newport News, Va.) had the Spartans' only first-place finish, winning the Section B high jump after clearing 5-5.

Chichester's time of 4:38.40 in the 1500 was the fastest time for any female runner this season in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference going into the meet. Miles' personal best of 4:55.46 in the same event was good for the third fastest time in the conference.

The Spartans also got top-10 finishes from Sasha Wilson (West Columbia, S.C.) in the shot put (seventh, 41-10 ¾), Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) in the long jump (eighth, 18-6 ½) and Tanisha Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) in the triple jump (10th 36-3 ½, PR).

The 1600 meter sprint medley team of Portia Davenport (Dale City, Va.), Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.), Kirby, and Chichester finished sixth in 4:01.07.

The 4x100 relay team of Davenport, Sanford, Kirby, and Cheri Hodges (Raleigh, N.C.) posted the fifth-fastest time in the MEAC (48.41) to finish 25th overall.

“The ladies competed very well with the elite teams that participated in this meet,” head coach Ronda Berard said. “I was extremely pleased with their performances because they gave everything they had.”

The Spartans travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take part in the UNC Invitational.
