BALTIMORE, Md. — Norfolk State freshman Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) is second overall in the heptathlon with a total of 2,887 points after the first day of the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University.
Through four events (100-meter hurdles, 200 meter dash, shot put, high jump), Jenkins trails only Natoya Baird of Coppin State who tallied 2,990 points.
Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) and Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.), the Spartans' two other participants in the heptathlon, are currently fourth (2,829) and fifth (2,697), respectively.
Faulkner and Jenkins took the top two spots in the shot put, with Faulkner placing first with a throw of 37 feet, three inches and Jenkins following with a mark of 34-0 ¾.
Kirby led the pack in the 200, finishing first in 25.56. Faulkner finished second in the 100 hurdles in 14.83, while Jenkins and Kirby came in fifth (15.23) and sixth (15.00), respectively.
The three remaining events in the heptathlon, the long jump, triple jump and 800 meter run, begin at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Admission for the 2008 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is $3 for children, students, and senior citizens and $5 for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the Hughes Stadium box office the day of the event.
