NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State football player Marquez Davis (Newport News, Va.) has been named the winner of the 2008 Joseph Echols Memorial Award, given annually by the Norfolk Sports Club to the top senior student-athlete at NSU.
Davis, an inside linebacker, led NSU and ranked second in the MEAC with 107 tackles, 9.5 of which came behind the line of scrimmage. He had added a team-high 3.5 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble.
Davis was a first-team All-MEAC selection, a Black College All-American, and an honorable mention Division I FCS All-American by The Sports Network. He helped the Spartans post an 8-3 record, their first-ever winning mark as a Division I school, and finish second in the MEAC.
