DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — JoJo Shields hit the game-winning single that scored Meghan Lambertz to lift Delaware State over Norfolk State 7-6 in the 2008 MEAC Softball Championship at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
With two outs and bases loaded, Shields hit bouncing blooper to second base to end the game.
NSU (20-32) rallied from a 6-2 deficit to tie the game at 6-all in the top of the seventh. Jacklyn Peaton (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the scoring started with a single to left field that scored Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio). Ashley Archer (Amelia, Va.) followed with an RBI single through the left side and Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) knocked in two runs with her double to left center.
Brittney Ruark pitched five innings in relief to earn the win. She allowed five hits and four earned runs while striking out four and walking three. Brown, who pitched her second complete game of the day, gave up 12 hits and seven earned runs to fall to 8-8 on the season.
Shields went 3-for-4 with three RBI for DSU (27-23) and Andrea Waters was 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Ramsey led the Spartan effort by going 3-for-4 and batted in two runs.
The Spartans play Morgan State at 9 a.m. on Friday in an elimination game.
