ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — With one runner on base and one out, Norfolk State sophomore Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) singled through the left side to break a 2-all tie and give the Spartans a 3-2 win over Morgan State in the 2008 MEAC Championship at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex on Friday. NSU (21-32) scored the winning run in the top of the 10th and held MSU (15-21) in the bottom of the frame to eliminate the Lady Bears in the two-hour and 33 minute contest.
Barnes delivered the game winner in the 10th, sending the Spartans to a 3:30 p.m. match-up with Bethune-Cookman. The Lady Wildcats eliminated Florida A&M with a 14-9 win earlier in the day.
The Spartans took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning and held it until the fifth when Meghan Jimenez hit a sacrifice fly to score Carolyn Howard.
In the ninth inning, Jacklyn Peaton (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored from third on an error by second baseman Dominisha Britton to go up 2-1, but Britton tied things up again in the bottom of the inning when she scored on Tamra Griffon's infield single.
Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) pitched her third consecutive complete game for the win. She yielded nine hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out six in 10 innings. Megan Johnson also went the distance and allowed nine hits, three runs, one earned, struck out four, and walked two.
Barnes was 2-for-5 with one RBI and Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) went 3-for-5 and scored twice for NSU. Griffin, Howard, and Ashley Vasquez each went 2-for-4 for Morgan State.
