NORFOLK, Va. – NSU (19-11, 14-10 MEAC) ended its final weekend of conference play with a 5-5 record, 3-5 in MEAC play, at the MEAC Southern Division meet hosted by Florida A&M.
NSU went 3-2 in Saturday's team play, and split its four conference games, beating Florida A&M and South Carolina State but losing to A&T and Bethune-Cookman. That was despite averaging a season-best 940 pins per team game. Five Spartans bowled season-best series and six bowled season-high games.
Leading the charge was freshman Sheila-Marie Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.), who bowled a personal and team season-best 1,097 for her five games (219.4 average). Smith knocked down at least 212 pins in each games, including a team season-high game of 242 in the win over FAMU.
The team's other freshman, Chelsea Krall (Virginia Beach, Va.), wasn't far behind. She rolled a season-best 999 series (199.8 game average), including a high game of 234 against FAMU.
Cathryn Myrick (Virginia Beach, Va.), Antoinette Drakeford (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Krystal Stevenson (Richmond, Va.) also recorded season-high series. Myrick knocked down 950 pins (190 average), including a season-high game of 223 in the loss to Bethune-Cookman. Drakeford rolled 345 in her two games, a 172.5 average, and rolled a personal-best 179 against B-CU. And Stevenson rolled a 328 (164 average), including a season-high 180 in the win over Winston-Salem State.
The Spartans capped team play with a team game of 996, another season-best, in the win over SCSU. Each Spartan bowled at least 193 in that game, led by Smith's 212 and Myrick's 204.
NSU went 2-3 in Sunday's baker games, with wins over North Carolina A&T and WSSU.
The Spartans are off next weekend, but return to the alley Jan. 24-25 at the Bowie State Classic.
