Spartan Women Perform Well at Father Diamond Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. — The Norfolk State women's track and field team turned in several top-ten finishes, including two first-place performances, on Saturday at the Father Diamond Invitational hosted by George Mason University.

Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) won the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 4.9 inches, whileKatie Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) took home top honors in the pole vault after clearing 10 feet.

The Spartans also did well in the shot put, weight throw and long jump. Monet Stevenson (Northumberland County, Va.) finished second in the shot put (38-7) and third in the weight throw (38-9), while Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) took third in both the shot put (36-6½) and the long jump (18-3).

On the track, Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) qualified for the 60-meter hurdles in 8.85 and finished second in 8.92 in the finals. Shanneka Claiborne (Ettrick, Va.) ran a 7.60 (2nd place) in the 60-meter finals, besting her time of 7.62 in the preliminaries. Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) continued her dominance in the distance races, finishing second in the 3000 in 10:52.48.

The Spartans travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take part in the Virginia Tech Invitational which runs from Friday to Saturday.
