WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — MaLisa Bumpus connected on a pair of free throws after being fouled with two seconds left in overtime to give the Winston-Salem State women's basketball team its first win of the season, 69-67, over Norfolk State on Monday night at the Joel Coliseum Annex.
NSU (0-16) was up by two with 1:31 left in overtime, but Keoshia Worthy and Bumpus each hit both of their free throws to keep the Spartans as one of the two remaining teams in Division I that have yet to win a game.
The Spartans looked poised to notch their first win as they mounted a four-point lead, 61-57, with 27 seconds left in regulation. But Bumpus tied things up by going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the last 17 seconds to force the extra period. For the game, Bumpus was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
It was a close game all the way through, with no team leading by more than seven points in regulation. There were also 16 ties and 10 lead changes in the contest.
WSSU (1-16) struck first on a jumper by Vontisha Woods with 19:40 left in the opening period to go up 2-0. The Spartans answered on a layup by Tashawna Higgins (Toronto, Ontario) with 18:26 left. NSU took its largest lead of the game, 19-12, on the second of two free throws by Higgins at the 9:51 mark.
A layup by Woods with 15 seconds left in the first half gave the Lady Rams their largest lead, 36-31, going into halftime.
Woods led all players with a double-double of 24 points and 18 rebounds, both career-highs. Bumpus had 19 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Worthy had 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.
For NSU, Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) had season-highs of 20 points and 39 minutes. Higgins recorded her first double-double of her Spartan career with 15 points and 13 rebounds (career-high). Tiffany McNair (Virginia Beach, Va.) matched her career-best with 10 rebounds.
NSU returns to Virginia to take on local rival Hampton on Saturday. The Battle of the Bay tips off at 4 p.m.
