LAUREL, Md. – Led by freshman Sheila-Marie Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) and her 207.7 average, the Norfolk State bowling team completed an 8-3 weekend at the Bowie State Classic.
Smith bowled a 1,246 series in the six team games, helping the Spartans win five of them to up their record to 27-14 on the year. Smith bowled three games of 200 or better, including a personal-best and team season-best 280 in a win over Lincoln (Pa.). She also bowled a 222 against Coppin State and 216 against Howard. NSU's only loss in Saturday's team games came to No. 6-ranked New Jersey City.
Cathryn Myrick (Virginia Beach, Va.) knocked down 1,103 pins in her six games for a 183.8 average. She had two 200-plus games. Other top performers on Saturday included Chelsea Krall (Virginia Beach, Va.), who averaged a 186 and knocked down 220 pins against Howard; Heather Grant (Virginia Beach, Va.), who averaged a 178.5 and bowled a 193 against New Jersey City; Tiffany Hunt (Norfolk, Va.), who averaged 178.4 and rolled a 204 against Lincoln; and Krystal Stevenson (Richmond, Va.), who averaged 177 and rolled a season-best 198 against St. Paul's.
On Sunday, the Spartans went 3-2 in baker games, including wins over nationally-ranked foes in Sacred Heart (No. 8) and St. Peter's (No. 19).
The Spartans are back in action this Friday through Sunday in Reading, Pa., at the Kutztown Invitational.
