NORMAL, Ill. — Andrew Nicholson scored a game-high 29 points to match his career high, and St. Bonaventure shot 67 percent from the floor en route to a 98-71 victory over Norfolk State in second-day action of the Basketball Travelers Classic on Saturday night at Illinois State's Redbird Arena.
Nicholson was 11-of-13 from the floor and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Bonnies (4-1), who connected on 37-of-55 field goals as a team for the game.
Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) scored a career-high 24 points for the Spartans (1-4), who lost their fourth straight.
SBU took the lead for good at 13-10 after a 3-pointer by Chris Matthews with 13:14 remaining in the first half. Later in the half, a 3-pointer by Michael Davenport capped an 8-0 Bonnies run that pushed their advantage to 15, 32-17.
Nicholson scored 23 of his points in the first half, connecting on 8-of-9 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line.
A 3-pointer by Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) early in the second half brought NSU within 44-34, but that would be as close as the Spartans would get.
Deloach finished with 16 points but made just 5-of-17 from the floor. Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) added nine points and six rebounds, and freshman Reggie Revels (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted career highs of eight points and three steals off the NSU bench.
Matthews added 21 points and made six 3-pointers for SBU, which shot 72 percent (23-of-32) from the floor in the second half. Davenport had 15 points and eight assists off the bench, and Jonathan Hall added 13 points and seven assists.
The Spartans wrap up their weekend in the round-robin tournament by facing Southeast Missouri State on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
