NSU Women Turn in Six 1st-Place Finishes at CNU Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.), Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) and Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.) were among several athletes on the Norfolk State women's track and field team who won their events at the Christopher Newport Captain's Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Brown won the long and triple jumps with leaps of 18-5 ¾ and 39-3 ¾, respectively. Chichester took the title in the 800 meters in 2:19.13, while Sanford won the 200 in 25. 51. 

The 4x400 team of Sanford teamed with  Allyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.), Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.), Shaniqua Moore (Baltimore, Md.) and Chichester to win the 4x400 relay in 4:02.33.

The Spartans also got first-place finishes from Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) and She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) who tied for first in the high jump after clearing 5-6.

Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) set a new school record in the pentathlon by scoring 3514 points to finish second. NSU also took fourth (Tanisha Jenkins, Louisa, Va.), fifth (Kirby), seventh (Alaina Hite, Chesterfield, Va.) and eighth (Ashanti Matthews, Norfolk, Va.) in the pentathlon.

In other action, Cheri Hodges (Raleigh, N.C) (7.83) and Davenport (7.91) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 60. Davenport also came in second in the 200 in 25.54. Katie Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) cleared 10-4 to finish sixth in the pole vault and Hite ran a 9.49 for a fourth-place finish in the finals of 60-meter hurdles.

The Spartans have two weeks off to prepare for the 2009 MEAC Indoor Championship which will be held at the Prince George's Sports Complex in Landover, Md. The two-day event runs from Feb. 13-14.
