LANDOVER, Md. - Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) placed third in the 800 meters and helped the NSU women's distance medley relay team finish third as the Spartan women are in fourth place after the second day of the 2009 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
Chichester finished third in the 800 in 2:15.77. She was less than half a second behind winner Merrecia James of Maryland Eastern Shore and runner-up Alexandria Condell of Bethune-Cookman.
Chichester also ran the mile (anchor) leg on the medley relay, as the Spartans finished third in 12:31.28. UMES won the relay and Hampton was second.
The Spartan women racked up the points in the field events, with four top-five finishes in the long jump and high jump. Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) placed third and Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) fourth in the long jump. NSU gained a total of 13 points in that event as Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) was seventh. Kirby jumped 19 feet, and Brown 18-6 ½ .
Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) and She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) tied for fourth and in the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches).
The competition resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday with the women's pole vault and pentathlon events.
