LANDOVER, Md.
- Led by a 1-4 sweep in the women's pole vault, the NSU women's track team rebounded from a sixth-place finish at last year's indoor championship by placing second at the 2009 MEAC Indoor Championship on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The Spartan women tallied 107 points. Hampton won the women's team title with 148 points.

The Spartan women continued their dominance of the pole vault, taking first through fourth places for 29 points in that event. Freshman Katie Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) set a new meet record and broke her own school record by clearing 11 feet, ¼ inch. This marks the fourth time in the last six years that the Spartan women have won the MEAC indoor pole vault title.

Last year's MEAC indoor champ, Candace Shoates (Newport News, Va.), placed second in the pole vault by clearing 9-2 ½. Freshman Andrea Saunders (Chesapeake, Va.) placed third (8-8 ¾) and sophomore Ashleigh Joseph (Chesapeake, Va.) was fourth (8-2 ¾).

In the women's pentathlon, NSU had three athletes score. Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) placed third with 3,394 points. Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) came in fourth with 3,384, and Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) placed sixth with 3,297 points.

Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) capped off a fine meet for the NSU women's field athletes with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. Her best jump was 38-5.

In the running events, sophomore Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) added to her solid weekend with a third-place finish in the mile run (5:05.85) and a fourth-place finish in the 3,000 meters (10:44.79). Chichester was also third in the 800 meters and ran on the third-place distance medley relay on Friday, contributing to 23 Spartan points.

Tierra Flowers (Coatesville, PA) had the top finish for NSU in the sprints. She placed fourth in 7.58 seconds.

“I'm very proud of how we performed this weekend,” NSU women's coach Ronda Berard said. “Our team really put it together. They believed in each other and are really maturing as a group.”
