Vinston, Woods to Compete at NCAA Indoor Track Championships

Corey Vinston is ranked sixth in the nation in the long jump.

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State long jumpers Corey Vinston (Hampton, Va.) and Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) will compete this Friday evening at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

The men's long jump (trial and finals) is scheduled to begin at 6:40 p.m. CT on Friday evening.

Vinston is currently ranked sixth in the nation with a best jump this season of 7.86 meters (25 feet, 9.5 inches). Vinston attained that mark when he set a new MEAC Indoor Championship meet record on Feb. 13. The 7.86 met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard.

Woods is ranked 12th in the field with a best jump of 7.77 meters (25-6) at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational on Jan. 17, which met the provisional standard. Woods finished second behind Vinston at the MEAC Indoor Championship (25-1.75).

The top eight finishers earn All-American honors. NSU's last indoor track All-American was high jumper Adrian Shears, who finished seventh in 2001. The Spartans' last male All-American track athlete was triple jumper Desmond Kapofu, who was sixth at the 2003 outdoor championship.

Vinston and Woods also provisionally qualified in the triple jump, but did not make the field for this weekend. Sophomore 60-meter hurdler Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.) also provisionally qualified, but did not make the field.
