SMYRNA, Tenn. – The Norfolk State bowling team concluded its regular season with a 2-5 record last Saturday and Sunday at the Music City Classic.
The Spartans (49-45) went 2-4 in Saturday's team games, with losses to Nebraska, N.C. A&T, Minnesota State and Jackson State. NSU rebounded, however, with wins over Grand Canyon and Winston-Salem State to finish the day.
Highlighting Saturday for the Spartans was a season-best team game of 1,070 pins in the win over Grand Canyon. Four of NSU's five bowlers knocked down at least 200 pins in that one. Chelsea Krall (Virginia Beach, Va.) rolled a season-high 235, Sheila-Marie Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) knocked down 231, Cathryn Myrick (Virginia Beach, Va.) posted a 211 and Krystal Stevenson (Richmond, Va.) tallied a season-high 202. Tiffany Hunt (Norfolk, Va.) wasn't far behind, with a 191.
Krall led all Spartans in Saturday's team games with 1,084 pins for a 180.1 average. Smith was next with 1,062 (177.0) and Myrick also knocked down over 1,000 (1,048, 174.7 average).
The Spartans concluded their weekend with a 4-1, best-of-7 baker game loss to Winston-Salem State on Sunday.
NSU will compete beginning this Friday at the MEAC Championship in Greensboro, N.C. The Spartans finished the regular season in first place among MEAC Southern Division teams. Action gets underway with qualifying rounds on Friday, after which point the teams will be seeded for Saturday's baker games. NSU finished third at last year's conference championship.
