GREENSBORO, N.C. – The most successful season in NSU women's bowling history came to a close on Saturday, as the Spartans went 1-2 in best-of-7 baker matches at the 2009 MEAC Bowling Championship.
The Spartans (52-50), who were seeded fifth after Friday's qualifying rounds, opened the day with a 4-1 loss to No. 4 Hampton, which dropped them into the loser's bracket. After a hard-fought 4-3 win over No. 8 seed North Carolina A&T, NSU succumbed to No. 6 Florida A&M, 4-0. The Rattlers advanced all the way to Sunday's championship round before losing to top-seeded Delaware State, 4-0.
Sophomore Cathryn Myrick (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named to the MEAC All-Tournament team for the Spartans. She averaged a 201.3 in Friday's team qualifying games.
Despite falling short of their first-ever MEAC title, NSU enjoyed a memorable year. The Spartans posted their most wins in a season (52) en route to their first-ever winning record. NSU also attained its first-ever MEAC regular-season divisional title, its first-ever National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) ranking at No. 18, and first-ever All-MEAC team member in freshman Sheila-Marie Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.).
