WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team (1-2) won its first match of the season on Wednesday, defeating host Winston-Salem State 5-2.
The Spartans won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point, then won four of the six singles matches.
Reigning MEAC Player of the Year Miroslav Vlcek (Vyskov, Czech Republic) and his senior teammate, Petr Krakora (Brno, Czech Republic), won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. The teams of Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jonathan Sessom (Houston, Texas), and Keenan Ruff (Norfolk, Va.) and Jahvair Mullings (Kingston, Jamaica), followed suit with identical 8-5 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively.
Vlcek, Culver and Krakora swept Nos. 1-3 singles, and Sessom won at No. 6 to clinch the win. The quartet dropped a total of 12 games, each winning in straight sets.
The Spartans return to action Thursday in a round-robin MEAC roundup in Sumter, S.C., against Bethune-Cookman.
