Women’s Tennis Picks Up 1st Win of the Season at WSSU

Lerissa Morris and the Spartans earned their first win of the season against WSSU

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Norfolk State women's tennis team earned their first win of the season in a 6-1 victory over Winston-Salem State (0-7) on Wednesday at the WSSU Tennis Complex.

The Spartans (1-2) swept the doubles matches and won all but one of the singles matches.

Stepanka Velebova (Tachov, Czech Republic) led the charge, defeating Shannon Loughnan 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Velbova joined with Lerissa Morris (Kingstown, SVG) at No. 1 doubles to take down Loughnan and Laken Joyce 8-3.

NSU also got straight-set singles wins from Morris at No. 3, Naeemah Brooks (Galloway, N.J.) at No. 4, Chenge Tsapayi (Harare, Zimbabwe) at No. 5 and Jennifer Astbury (Chesapeake, Va.) at No. 6.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday in a round-robin MEAC round-up in Sumter, S.C. They play Bethune-Cookman at 9 a.m. and North Carolina A&T at 1 p.m.
