NORFOLK, Va. — Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) scored a game-high 23 points and Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) added 20 to help Norfolk State win its third straight game, 74-61, in the regular-season finale for both teams on Thursday night at Echols Hall.
With the win, the Spartans (11-17, 9-7) forced a four-way tie for third place in the MEAC standings with A&T, Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman. Based on the multiple team tiebreaker, NSU will be the No. 3 seed in next week's MEAC Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Spartans open play on Thursday, March 12, at 6 p.m. against the winner of the No. 6-11 first-round matchup.
The first half was played at a frenetic pace, but both teams struggled on offensive end. The Spartans committed 16 of their 21 turnovers in the half, but held the Aggies (16-15, 9-7) to 33 percent shooting and got a strong effort on the boards (31-14 in the half). NSU used a 12-3 run over an eight-minute stretch of the half to take a 28-20 lead. Kevin Worsley (Chesapeake, Va.) had four points in the spurt and Deloach the final three.
NSU led 31-29 at halftime, but turned it up a notch in the second half. The Spartans shot 53 percent in the final stanza, holding A&T to 33 percent, and turned the ball over just five times. Lyons had 14 of his 20 after the intermission, and Deloach 16 of his 23.
NSU started the second half with a 9-3 spurt, fueled by seven points and two 3-pointers by Lyons. The Aggies pulled within 47-43 on a 3-pointer by Dwane Joshua with 14:09 remaining, but NSU went on a 10-3 run over the next three and a half minutes. Lyons had another trey in the run, and Worsley capped it with a dunk off a feed from Deloach for a 57-46 NSU edge.
The Aggies would not get within nine the rest of the way.
NSU enjoyed a 52-38 advantage on the boards. Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.) had a game-high 13, Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.) snared a career-high 11, and Worsley finished with a season-high 10. Worsley, one of four NSU seniors playing in their final home game, also scored 11 points for his first double-double of the year and the second in his career.
Nicholas Wilson and Marc Hill scored 11 points each and Ed Jones had 10 for the Aggies.
