HAMPTON, Va. — The Norfolk State women's track and field team turned in several top finishes en route to winning the 2009 Hampton Relays on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium. The Spartans racked up 144.50 points to win the meet, finishing well ahead of runner-up Morgan State (108 points). Host Hampton finished fifth with 72 points.
The Spartans got first-place finishes from Andrea Saunders (Chesapeake, Va.) in the pole vault (8-6 ¼ ), Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) in the high jump (5-4) and Allyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) in the 400 hurdles (1:02.91).
Another highlight of the day wasTia Miles (Richmond, Va.) performance in the 3000-meter steeplechase. She set a new school record in the event by finishing second in 12:14.13.
On the track, NSU got good performances from Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) (3rd, 14.41) and Ashanti Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) (4th, 14.45) in the 100-meter hurdles, Portia Davenport (Dale City, Va.) (4th, 12.04) and Tierra Flowers (Coatesville, Pa.) (5th, 12.05) in the 100 meters and Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) in the 1500 (5:07.31).
In the field events, the Spartans had a 1-2-4 finish in the pole vault. Candace Shoates (Newport News, Va.) and Ashleigh Joseph (Chesapeake, Va.) finished second and fourth, respectively behind Saunders.
Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) finished second in the triple jump with a jump of 36-3 and hit a mark of 17-0 ¾ in the long jump for a third-place finish. Shanlynn Vaughn (Norfolk, Va.) led all Spartan finishers in the javelin with a throw of 89-2 ½ and finished sixth in the high jump after clearing 5-4.
The Spartans head to Baltimore, Md. on Saturday to take part in the Morgan State Legacy Meet.
