Hoyas Top NSU, 15-4

Box Score

BETHESDA, Md.
– Tom Elliott homered and drove in four runs as host Georgetown topped Norfolk State 15-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field.

Elliott went 4-for-5, Tommy Lee was 3-for-3, and four other Hoyas (12-29) drove in two runs each.

Anselmo Cantu (Virginia Beach, Va.) was 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Va.) was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI for the Spartans (16-19).

NSU got on the board in the top of the first inning. John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) led off the game by drawing a walk from GU starter Tommy Isaacs. Lynch went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Hairston's groundout. Lynch then scored on a Georgetown error.

The lead would be short-lived, though, as the Hoyas scored two runs on Sean Lamont's double in the bottom of the first off NSU starter Horace Smith III (Emporia, Va.).

In the bottom of the second, Elliott hit a two-run homer and Andy Lentz followed with a solo shot in the Hoyas' four-run inning. They added two more in the third, five in the fifth, and one each in the sixth and seventh.

NSU scored three times in the fifth inning. Cantu led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Chris Warren (Virginia Beach, Va.). Hairston added an RBI single, and Warren later came around to score on a Georgetown error.

Lamont, Lentz, Kelly Muir and Billy Henig each drove in two for Georgetown. Isaacs (2-2) got the win, allowing four runs, two earned, in five innings. He struck out five.

Smith (1-3) surrendered 10 hits and eight runs in three innings to take the loss. Ryan Wiggins (Hayes, Va.), making just his second career pitching appearance, fanned a career-high five in 3.1 innings of relief.

The Spartans return to action this weekend at Florida A&M in their final MEAC regular-season series.
