Women’s Track Finishes 3rd at MEAC Championship

Junior Allyssa Pickett qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the 400 hurdles

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Norfolk State women's track and field team tallied 106 points to finish in third place at the 2009 MEAC Outdoor Championship at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T University.

The Hampton University women (119 points) won their seventh consecutive outdoor conference title. Maryland Eastern Shore came in second with 109 points.

Junior Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) won the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 5 inches. Sophomore Shanlynn Vaughn (Norfolk, Va.) cleared the same height for a third-place finish, while sophomore She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) tied for eighth with a jump of 5-3.

Allyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) bested her regional-qualifying time of 1:00.71 that she ran in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles by running a 59:14 to finish fourth in the finals.

The Spartans' 4x100 team of junior Tierra Flowers (Coatesville, Pa.), sophomore Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.), senior Portia Davenport (Dale City, Va.) and freshman Shanneka Claiborne (Ettrick, Va.) also qualified for regionals by finishing second in 45.10.

Claiborne finished sixth (11.76) in the finals of the 100 and sophomore Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.) came in seventh (24.41) in the 200.

The 4x400 team of Pickett, Sanford, Davenport and Kirby placed third with a time of 3:43, while junior Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.) finished eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 12:42.11.

In the triple jump, freshman Alaina Hite (Chesterfield, Va.) and sophomore Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) finished seventh (38-4) and ninth (38-1), respectively.

Pickett (400h) and the 4x100 team will compete at the NCAA East Regional on May 29-30 at North Carolina A&T.
