Former Spartans Sweat, Stepney Earn Hall of Fame Nods

Former women's basketball coach James Sweat will be inducted into the Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame.

NORFOLK, Va. - James Sweat, former NSU women's basketball coach, and former NSU running back Larry Stepney will be inducted into the Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 7, the organization announced.  

Sweat spent 19 seasons at Norfolk State and 26 overall as a college head coach before he retired at the end of the 2006-07 season. He compiled a record of 346-218 leading the Spartans, and a 529-262 record overall. Sweat's NSU teams made five NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional appearances and won five CIAA Tournament titles. He also led the Spartans to the school's first-ever MEAC title and NCAA Division I Tournament berth in 2002.

Stepney was a standout running back at Norview High School in Norfolk, then NSU in the 1970s. He went on to a storied high school coaching career at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, where he won 82 games and three Eastern District championships.
