FAIRFAX, Va. — The Norfolk State women's track and field team posted several top-five finishes at the 2010 George Mason Father Diamond Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman Kaleena Gray (Coatesville, Pa.) finished second in the weight throw and set the school record in the event with a throw of 47 feet, 8 inches. Gray also finished eighth in the shot put (37-8 ¾).
Junior Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Ashanti Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) finished second and third, respectively, in the long jump. Kirby jumped 18-9½, while Matthews leaped 18-4¾. The pair also ran the 60-meter hurdles with Kirby finishing seventh in 8.88 and Matthews coming in ninth in 9.09.
Junior She'Anna Mitchell (Newport News, Va.) finished third in the high jump (5-5) and junior Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) and senior Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) tied for fourth (5-3). Jenkins also finished fourth in the triple jump (37-7).
In the running events, Shanneka Claiborne (Ettrick, Va.) finished fourth in the 200 in 25.68, sophomore Aurora Scott (Portsmouth, Va.) was fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 10:48.78 and junior Jennifer Chichester(Silver Spring, Md.) came in fifth in the 1,000 meters in 3:05.67.
The Spartans take part in the Maryland Invitational next weekend.
