LANDOVER, Md. — The Norfolk State women's track team turned in a second-place finish on Saturday at the University of Maryland Terrapin Indoor Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. The Spartans scored 131 points to finish behind host Maryland.
The Spartans did well both on the track and in the field events. Shanneka Claiborne (Ettrick, Va.) won the 200 meters in 25.37 and finished first in the preliminaries of the 60 meters (7.59). Tierra Flowers (Coatesville, Pa.) came in second in the 60 (7.67) and the 200 (26.15).
NSU's other win of the day came from Katie Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the pole vault. Wright cleared 11 feet, 3 ¾ inches to finish in first place. She was followed by Candace Shoates (Newport News, Va.) and Ashleigh Joseph (Chesapeake, Va.) who tied for third with a height of 9-0 ¼.
Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles after running an 8.61. She came in fourth in the finals in 8.74 and finished seventh in the long jump after clearing 17-1 ½.
In some of the other field events, She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) came in second in the high jump (5-4 ¼), Elaine Rhodes (Norfolk, Va.) was third in the triple jump (38-0 ¾) and Kaleena Gray (Coatesville, Pa.) finished fourth in the weight throw (46-11 ¾). Ashanti Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) was third in the long jump (17-11 ½) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.72).
The 4x400 relay team (3:56.97) and the distance medley team (12:35.71) each turned in third-place finishes.
The Spartans travel to Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday to take part in the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational.
