NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State track and field star April Holmes has been selected as the recipient of the Scott O'Hara Memorial Award, to be presented by the Norfolk Sports Club at its 65th Jamboree on March 10 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.
The award is designed to recognize an individual who has overcome personal adversity to achieve success. Holmes had her left leg amputated below the knee following a train accident in 2001. She has since become a star on the U.S. Paralympic Team. In 2008, she won a gold medal in the 100 meters at the Paralympic Games in Beijing. She is the current world record holder in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races in the T44 classification (one leg amputated below the knee).
Jamboree tickets can be purchased by calling Wayne Ford (497-3095) or Betty Dail at the Norfolk Sports Club Office (497-9583). Tickets are $85 each or $800 for a table of 10.
