GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team competed at the UNC Greensboro Doubles Challenge this weekend against several North Carolina schools.
Senior Jennifer Astbury and freshman Maryna Kariuk took the lone win of the weekend after defeating North Carolina Central's Kelly Chaparro and Marie Nedstrom, 8-2, on Friday in the Gold group.
The duo also dropped an 8-1 decision to UNC Greensboro's Mikayla Rogers and Dialra Yurtkuran and another 8-1 loss to UNC Wilmington's Christina Riley and Casey Dashiell.
Also in the gold group, junior Ashley Foster teamed with NCCU's Ashley Rogers, and the duo nearly came away with the win over Yurtkuran and Mikayla Rogers before falling, 9-7. Foster and Ashley Rogers also lost a pair of NCCU double partners in Kelly Chaparro and Marie Nedstrom, 8-3, and to Cameron Chatman and Tati Velasquez, 8-0.
In the Navy group on Friday, senior Chenge Tsapayi and junior Naeemah Brooks lost to UNCG's Steph MacFarlane and Alex Whitehead, 8-1, Neena Wanko and Manon Bissat of East Carolina, 8-4, and NCCU's Olesya Palko and Fredrica Larsson, 8-0.
Sophomore Rebecca Graff and freshman Gabriella Jonsson also saw action in the Navy group, as the duo fell short against UNCW's Olga Blank and Christina Lee, 8-0, against Palko and Larsson, 8-1, and to Wanko and Bissat, 8-5.
All seven players returned for Round 2 Saturday, but again NSU struggled to find the right magic. Astbury and Kariuk dropped a pair of 8-1 decisions to Mikayla Rogers and Annette Rios of UNCG and Blank and Lindsay Leblang of UNCW along with an 8-0 loss to Palko and Chatman.
Graff and Jonsson fell by an 8-1 score to Rogers and Rios and by a pair of 8-0 margins to Whitehead and Tooli Wilkins of UNCG and Wanko and Natalie Collins of East Carolina.
Down in the Gold group, Foster and Tsapayi had a little bit more success but still came up on the short end of 8-4 losses to NCCU's Nedstrom and Larsson and then Ashley Rogers and Chaparro. Brooks, meanwhile, teamed with NCCU's Velasquez and nearly came away with the victory before dropping an 8-6 decision to Rogers and Chaparro after an earlier 8-0 loss to Manon Bassat and Kristen Gordon of ECU.
Both tennis teams will compete at the ITA Regional this weekend starting on Friday, with the women competing at Old Dominion and the men heading up to the University of Virginia in the last fall action for both teams.
