Armstead Named MEAC Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Charlotte Armstead of the Norfolk State volleyball team was named the MEAC Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Armstead averaged 4.17 kills per set to lead NSU to a 2-1 record on the week, with wins over Hampton at home and a come-from-behind victory at Bethune-Cookman. The right side hitter attacked at a .379 clip and also added seven digs, five blocks, five service aces and two assists on the week.

NSU finished the regular season in third place in the MEAC Southern Division with a 5-3 mark, tied for the program's best conference record ever. The Spartans' 13-19 record ranks as the second-most wins in the Division I era for the volleyball program. The 1998 team posted 19 wins and had a 5-3 MEAC record that season.

In the 3-0 win over the Pirates Wednesday in the last home match of the season, Armstead hit a season-best .483 with 16 kills and just two errors to go along with three blocks, three aces and three digs.

After posting 15 kills against the Wildcats in a 3-2 victory on Friday, she put up 19 kills – 11 in the first set alone – and hit .394 in a 3-1 loss to nine-time defending MEAC champion Florida A&M on Sunday.

In the process, she set the NSU single-season record for kills with 318, breaking the previous program best of 307 set by April Johnson in 1996.

For the season, Armstead leads the team with an average of 2.65 kills per set and is first among NSU's hitters with a .237 attack percentage. She stands second with 0.56 blocks and has also added 0.41 digs, 0.26 aces on the year.

NSU will face Delaware State Friday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the MEAC tournament.
