Football Team Wraps up 2010 Season at Savannah State

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va.
- The Norfolk State football team (5-5) closes out its 2010 season with a non-conference game this Saturday at future MEAC member Savannah State. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Savannah, Ga.

Both squads are coming off a victory last week, and the Spartans need one more win to clinch a winning season.

The Spartans won their third straight game last Saturday, topping Delaware State 31-21 on Senior Day at Dick Price Stadium. NSU gained 459 yards of total offense - their second-most of the season and most against a Division I team - including a season-high 310 yards rushing. DeAngelo Branche, one of 19 seniors playing in their fi nal home games, rushed for a career-high 212 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way. Chris Walley, who completed 17-of-26 passes, tossed a second-quarter touchdown pass to Jeremy Wicker for NSU's other touchdown.

Savannah State, meanwhile, put an end to a 10-game losing streak and captured its first victory of the year in a 28-21 victory over another future MEAC member, North Carolina Central, last Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The Tigers jumped out to a 28-7 second-quarter lead on the strength of three touchdown passes, two from Antonio Bostick and one from A.J. Defi lippis, and held off the Eagles in the second half. Sheldon Barnes added 120 rushing yards and another score for SSU.

THE SERIES
• This will be the sixth all-time meeting between NSU and Savannah State. NSU holds a 4-1 edge.
• The last time the teams played, the Spartans rolled up 539 yards of offense and 58 points - the most
an NSU team has scored in a regulation game in their Division I history - and cruised to a 58-29 win
at Savannah State on Oct. 1, 2005.
• SSU's lone win in the series was a 41-34, double overtime win on Sept. 11, 2004 in Norfolk.

QUICK HITS
• With a win Saturday, the Spartans would achieve a winning record of 6-5. If they can accomplish that,
it would mark their first-ever back-to-back winning seasons in the Division I era.
• The four-year members of the 19-man Spartan senior class have contributed to 25 wins since 2007,
most by a senior class in the Division I era. With a win over Savannah State, this year's seniors would
have 26, the most by a senior class since the 1985 group had 27.
DeAngelo Branche needs 215 rushing yards to become the school's all-time leading rusher. He currently has 3,445, trailing only LaRue Harrington (3,659) in school annals.
