Payne, Spartan Women Complete Season Sweep of Winston-Salem State, Win 72-58

NORFOLK, Va. — Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, to help the Norfolk State women's basketball team complete the season sweep of Winston-Salem State with a 72-58 win on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall. The win snapped NSU's season-long seven-game losing streak.

Payne put NSU (4-18) on the board first with a 3-pointer with 19 minutes left in the first half. MaLisa Bumpus tied the game with a trey ball of her own at the 18:35 mark, but one of two free throws by Marian Brooks (Woodbridge, Va.) put the Spartans up 4-3.

NSU jumped out to a five-point lead, 17-12, after another 3-pointer by Payne with 8:54 left in the opening period. A basket by Batavia Owens (Norfolk, Va.) with 7:39 left put the Spartans up seven, 19-12. NSU led 30-24 at half time.

WSSU (2-24) could get no closer than eight for the rest of the game. A pair of free throws by Whitney Long (Raleigh, N. C.) with five seconds left sealed the win for the Spartans.

NSU shot 43.6 (24-of-55) from the field for the game and a season-high-tying 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from beyond the arc. The Spartans outrebounded the Lady Rams 39-32, forced 17 WSSU turnovers and had 10 steals.

Bumpus led WSSU with 17 points, while Vontisha Woods had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Rene Rector also scored in double figures with 11 points.

Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) had her first career double-double with 17 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. Long came off the bench to score 14 points, all in the second half. She was 5-of-6 from the floor and 2-3 from 3-point range.

The Spartans play their final home game of the season on Monday when they host South Carolina State at 4 p.m.
