From the Desk of Head Tennis Coach Matthew Halfpenny:
“For the past six weeks, the men's and women's tennis teams have been conducting our practices three days a week, early in the morning at an indoor tennis center across town. We faced some pretty frigid weather, coach Torrie and I getting out the ice scrapers to clear off the windshields on the NSU vans. On several occasions while loading the vans, my cheerful good morning to the players was returned with an evil stare. In the end we made it through together, and the kids did a great job. The culmination of the six weeks was our 1000 point fundraiser tournament. Both teams competed against each other in a fun and spirited practice. Combine the competition with conditioning and everyone was happy. Although some of the kids may have been tired after the practice, they all worked together and did a great job to reach our goal.
We now began practicing outdoors on Monday, Feb. 22. I certainly am looking forward to being able to hit five days a week. I am sure the kids will debate what is worse, getting up early or practicing in the cold. It looks as though the weather is starting to turn, so I believe this is good timing! As we head outdoors, I know both teams will continue to work hard and progress. We are preparing for our first home match on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. vs. Chowan. I know everyone is excited to play on the campus of Norfolk State University. I want to thank our entire athletic administration for their help, along with Janet Jones and the entire fleet management team. I also would like to thank the folks over at ODU for their hospitality during the past six weeks. Finally, I would like to thank everyone that supports us and has sent in a donation - keep them coming! Every donation helps, and we can't thank you all enough. We hope to see you at the courts soon. Take care. GO SPARTANS!”
