BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State bowling team finished last weekend with a 5-5 record at the Morgan State Invitational. Highlighting the Spartans' two days of competition was a 4-1 slate in Sunday's baker games.
The Spartans (60-46) were slow out of the gate, finishing 1-4 in Saturday's team games. The Spartans picked up a 903-823 win over Fayetteville State, but lost to Kutztown, Adelphi, Nebraska and St. Peter's.
Senior Tiffany Hunt (Norfolk, Va.) compiled the best average among the Spartans in the team games. She averaged a 196 (588 total pins) in her three games. That included a 244 game against St. Peter's, the best game for a Spartan bowler on Saturday. Sophomore Sheila-Marie Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) was next with a 173.2 average as she knocked down the most total pins for NSU with 866.
The Spartans rebounded with a strong effort on Sunday with baker victories over Long Island, St. Paul's, Morgan State and Adelphi. Their only baker loss was to Elmhurst. The win over Adelphi came in NSU's last match of the weekend. In the best-of-7 baker format, NSU fell behind 3-1 only to win the last three games to take the match, 4-3.
The Spartans are off this weekend before returning to action March 5-7 at the ECAC Championships in North Brunswick, N.J.
