WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Norfolk State women's track team opened the 2010 outdoor season with several top-10 finishes at the Wake Forest Open on Friday and Saturday at Kentner Stadium.
The Spartans got a big win from the 4x100 team of Tierra Flowers (Coatesville, Pa.), Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.), Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.), and Shanneka Claiborne (Ettrick, Va.) who finished first in 45.67.
Kirby also had a good individual outing, finishing fourth in the long jump (18 feet, 5 ¾ inches) and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.27). She set her personal record of 14.06 in the preliminaries on the 100 hurdles to qualify for the finals. Ashanti Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) finished seventh in the 100 hurdles in 14.82 and jumped 16-9 ¾ in the long jump.
Sanford posted a time of 24.59 in the 200 meters for a seventh-place finish, while Flowers finished 10th in 24.77. Elaine Rhoades (Norfolk, Va.) came in sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:02.22 and Allyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) finished ninth in 1:03.34. Rhoades and Pickett were the Spartans' top-two finishers in the 400, running times of 58.16 and 58.92, respectively.
In the distance races, Kellen Rutto (Eldoret, Kenya) ran an 18:28.89 in the 5,000 and Jamia Hutto (Orlando, Fla.) completed the 1,500 in 5:13.03.
NSU also did well in the field events. Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) finished fourth in the high jump after clearing 5-6. She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) came in eighth with a jump of 5-4 ¼. Kaleena Gray (Coatesville, Pa.) finished fifth in the discus (133-7) and 16th in the shot put (38-10 ½), while Alaina Hite (Chesterfield, Va.) came in 10th in the triple jump (35-4 ½).
The Spartans travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Adidas Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State on Friday and Saturday.
