Spartan Women Compete at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Norfolk State women's track team competed at the Raleigh Relays on Friday and Saturday at Paul Derr Track on the campus of North Carolina State University.

On the track, Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) and Ashanti Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles in 14.01 and 14.23, respectively. Matthews finished sixth in 14.07, while Kirby came in ninth in 14.15.

In the 1,500 meters, Kellen Rutto (Eldoret, Kenya) posted a time of 5:02.13 and was trailed by Syeeda Gee (Philadelphia, Pa.), who finished in 5:14:56. The 4x100 team of Tierra Flowers (Coatesville, Pa.), Kirby, Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.) and Shanneka Claiborne (Ettrick, Va.) came in third in 46.01.

Kirby led the Spartans in the field events by finishing third in the long jump (19 feet, 3 ¼ inches). Alaina Hite (Chesterfield, Va.) was the Spartans' top finisher in the triple jump with a jump of 38-4 ¼. She was followed by Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) (36-9) and Danielle Drummer (Norfolk, Va.) (33-11 ¼).

Kaleena Gray (Coatesville, Pa.) had throws of 38-7 ¾ in the shot put and 129-3 in the discus.

NSU takes part in the William & Mary Colonial Relays on Friday and Saturday.
