NORFOLK, Va.
– The Norfolk State men's tennis team (2-7 overall, 0-3 MEAC) compiled a 1-3 mark last week competing in a MEAC round-robin event in Sumter, S.C. with other schools from the conference's Southern Division.

The Spartans began their trip with a 5-2 loss to Bethune-Cookman on Thursday. NSU dropped the doubles point after narrow 8-6 and 8-7 losses at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. NSU picked up a pair of points thanks to singles wins by Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ben Marks (Worcestershire, England) at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Both earned three-set wins over their opponents, prevailing in third-set super tiebreakers.

But the Wildcats won at third through sixth singles to take the match.

The Spartans dropped a 6-1 decision to defending MEAC champion South Carolina State on Friday. The lone bright spot for NSU was the continued solid play of Culver, who topped SCSU's Radek Pivonka 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to account for the Spartans' one point in the match.

NSU capped its trip by splitting its two matches on Saturday. The Spartans fell 7-0 to Florida A&M in the morning, but rebounded with a 5-2 victory over Winston-Salem State in the afternoon. Despite defaulting at No. 3 doubles due to having just five players, NSU bounced back with wins at No. 1 and 2 to take the doubles point. Culver and Jonathan Sessom (Houston, Texas) won a 9-7 match at No. 1 doubles, and the team of Marks and Keenan Ruff (Norfolk, Va.) won 8-3 at No. 2.

Culver, Marks, Sessom and Ruff all won in straight sets in singles to help the Spartans finish off the win.

NSU is back in action on Tuesday against James Madison at the NSU Tennis Complex beginning at 10 a.m.
