HOWELL, N.J. – The Norfolk State women's bowling team capped its regular season with a 3-7 mark last weekend at the ECAC Championships.
The Spartans (63-52) started strong with a 932-761 win over Long Island in Saturday's team games. Freshman Jessica Overton (Mechanicsville, Va.) bowled her collegiate best, with a 215 game, and Sheila-Marie Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) knocked down 208 against LIU.
The Spartans would struggle the rest of the day, dropping games to Delaware State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Kutztown and Adelphi. Overton led NSU with 865 total pins for a 173 average.
NSU fared better in Sunday's baker games, going 2-3. Four of the five matches were nail-biters. NSU lost 710-701 to New Jersey City, beat Morgan State 673-671 and lost to St. Peter's 649-647 in the total pinfall format.
In the best-of-7 match play, NSU topped LIU 4-1 before concluding its day with a 4-3 loss to St. Peter's.
The Spartans are off this week before competing in the 2010 MEAC Championships, March 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C.
