Spartan Women Compete at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Norfolk State women's track and field team wrapped up competition in the 2010 Penn Relays on Friday after solid performances by several Spartans.

The sprint medley te am of Tierra Flowers (Coatesville, Pa.), Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.), Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.) and Jennifer Chichester(Silver Spring, Md.) ran in the Championship of America section, finishing 23rd in 4:04.43.

Allyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) and Elaine Rhoades (Norfolk, Va.) both competed in the Championship section of the 400-meter hurdles and finished in 1:03.09 and 1:03.16, respectively.

Rhoades finished 14th in the College section of the triple jump after hitting a mark of 38 feet, 4 ½ inches and Kirby was 23rd in the College section of the long jump (17-9 ¾). Kaleena Gray (Coatesville, Pa.) had throws of 126-5 in the College section of the discus and 35-2 in the College section of the shot put.

Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.), She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) and Kirby each cleared 5-6 in the College section of the high jump, while the 4x100 team was just 1.22 seconds away from qualifying for the finals of the College section. Sanford, Flowers, Ashanti Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) and Kirby finished 27th in 46.35.

The Spartans have this week off to prepare for the 2010 MEAC Outdoor Championship which runs from May 6-8 at Irwin Belk Track at Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
