BETHESDA, Md. – Andy Lentz homered and drove in five runs, and host Georgetown capitalized on 12 walks to top Norfolk State 13-1 on Wednesday night at Shirley Povich Field to earn a split of the season series.
The Hoyas (16-12) only outhit the Spartans (8-12-1) 13-12, but control issues hampered NSU. Five Spartan pitchers combined to walk 12 Georgetown batters, including five in 1.2 innings of work by starter Horace Smith (Emporia, Va.), who dropped to 1-1 on the year.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. John Rasberry (Suffolk, Va.) led off the game with a single and scored on a two-out John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) double.
But the Hoyas scored in each of their first four at-bats and seven of their eight on the night. GU scored once in the first, twice in the second, once in the third and twice more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. The Hoyas put it out of reach with a five-run sixth inning that included a grand slam by Lentz and a solo homer by Rand Ravnaas.
Nine different Spartans had at least one hit in the game, including three with two apiece. Lynch was 2-for-4 and doubled twice. Juan Herrera (Santiago, D.R.) and Ryan Wiggins (Hayes, Va.) also had two hits each.
Tom Elliott and Sean Lamont had two hits each to lead the Hoyas. Ravnaas was 1-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored. Bobby Kirby earned the win for the Hoyas, allowed seven hits and one run in five innings.
The Spartans host Maryland Eastern Shore this Saturday and Sunday in a three-game MEAC series. The teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.
