RADFORD, Va. – East Tennessee State wasted little time taking care of the Norfolk State volleyball team Saturday afternoon, defeating the Spartans, 25-11, 25-10, 25-15 at the Radford Tournament at the Dedmon Center.
Junior Jasmine Frazier and sophomore Chynna Blaker each posted five kills on the afternoon, while freshmen Noelle Eagles and Arielle Knafel contributed nine and seven digs, respectively. Sophomore Kristen Burt added 12 assists.
The loss dropped NSU's record to 3-5 on the year, while ETSU improved to 6-1.
Megan Devine had seven kills for ETSU, which hit .286 for the match and committed only eight attack errors. For the second straight contest, NSU hit in the negative, posting a -.111 attack percentage. The Bucs also held an 11-3 edge in service aces and a 9-2 advantage in blocks.
Down 5-1 to begin the match, the Spartans made a quick comeback, getting to within one at 7-6 thanks to an ETSU attack error. The Bucs won then won 10 of the next 12 points to take an insurmountable lead at 17-8. Kills by sophomore Charlotte Armstead and Knafel briefly slowed down ETSU, but the Bucs went on to win the first set, 25-11.
ETSU raced out to an even bigger lead to start the second set, going up by a 9-1 score before Frazier added two kills in a 5-1 rally for NSU that made it 10-6 ETSU. Blaker knocked down two straight kills a short time later to make it 13-8 ETSU, but the Bucs wasted little time extending the lead, scoring the last seven points of the set for a 25-10 win.
NSU grabbed a 3-2 lead to begin the third set after a bad set on the Bucs. Kills by redshirt sophomore Paige Gary-Canty and Armstead helped the Spartans stay with ETSU until the Bucs went on an 11-1 run to go up by 10 at 16-6. Frazier added two kills late in the set as NSU scored 7-of-9 points later on, but a block by ETSU ended play with the Bucs winning the third set, 25-15.
The Spartans will head to the Coastal Carolina Classic next weekend, beginning Friday with USC Upstate at 4 p.m.
