Duquesne Tops NSU, 95-73

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa.
– Sean Johnson scored 19 points to lead six Duquesne players in double figures, and the host Dukes cruised to a 95-73 win over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Freshman guard Pendarvis Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Spartans (1-11), who lost their 10th straight contest.

Turnovers and fouls continued to hamper NSU. The Dukes shot 45 free throws, making 36, while NSU shot just 14 free throws (making 13), while committing 26 turnovers.

Duquesne scored nine of the game's first 11 points. But the Spartans answered with a 10-4 run, capped by a Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) layup, to cut their deficit to 13-12. Duquesne, however, limited NSU to just one field goal over the final 5:13 of the half, outscoring the Spartans 13-3 in that stretch to take a 43-28 advantage into the break.

Just like in the first half, Duquesne scored nine of the first 11 points in the second half to take a commanding 52-30 lead. The Dukes led by at least 16 and by as many as 30 in the second half.

Damian Saunders added 14 points, Bill Clark had 13, B.J. Monteiro scored 11, and Eric Evans and Joel Wright chipped in with 10 apiece for Duquesne (7-5), which shot 47 percent from the floor and 80 from the foul line.

Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) had 15 points and nine rebounds and Hampton added 12 and six, but both fouled out in the second half. Kris Brown (Suffolk, Va.) scored a career-high six points off the NSU bench.

The Spartans play their final 17 games against MEAC opponents, beginning this Saturday with a 6 p.m. home game with Bethune-Cookman.
