BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior high jumpers She'Anna Mitchell and Jonee Artis and sophomore sprinter Champagne Bell notched top-10 finishes in their respective events over the weekend at Virginia Tech's Hokie Invitational.
Mitchell and Artis both cleared 5 feet, 4.5 inches in the high jump. That represents their individual season bests in the event, and the top height cleared for any Spartan woman so far this indoor season. Mitchell tied for fourth place based on fewer misses, and Artis tied for 10th.
Bell, meanwhile, continued her stellar indoor season with an indoor PR in the 400 meters. The reigning MEAC Athlete of the Week placed third overall and second among collegiate runners in a time of 55.82 seconds, more than two seconds better than her previous best this season.
Bell also ran the lead-off leg on the Spartans' 4x400 relay team which turned in a season-best time of 3:57.58, good for 14th place.
Among other solid performances was a season-best effort by sophomore Kellen Rutto in the 3,000 meters of 10:56.42, nearly 25 seconds better than her previous best this season; pole vaulter Katie Wright tied for eighth and matched her season-best 10-6 clearance; and Kaleena Gray recorded a season-best weight throw of 48-3.5 to place 13th.
The Spartan women will compete next Friday and Saturday at the Penn State National Open and the CNU Captains Classic.
