UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Norfolk State's field athletes recorded a number of season-best performances to pace the Spartan women Friday and Saturday at the Penn State National Invitational.
Leading the way again was first-year sophomore Champagne Bell, who leapt a personal-best 20 feet, 1.75 inches to place second in the long jump on Friday. She was the top collegiate finisher after posting a MEAC seasonal best and the No. 14 distance in the nation.
On Saturday, senior Elaine Rhoades and junior Alaina Hite posted the two best triple jump marks for the squad this season. Rhoades placed ninth with a season-best effort of 39 feet, 5.75 inches, which tops the previous longest jump in the conference this season. Hite was 12th overall with a PR of 38-10.25.
Junior Katie Wright continued the succession of standout field performances with a PR of 11-3.75 in the pole vault. She finished in fifth place. Her mark represents the top clearance in the MEAC this season.
On the track, Shanneka Claiborne performed well in both the 60 and 200. She ran a season-best time of 7.46 seconds in the prelims before placing sixth in the finals in 7.53. Claiborne also ran a season-best time in the 200 (24.93).
Bell came in seventh in the 400 in 56.55 seconds. She and Rhoades also helped the 4x400 relay team cut six seconds off its season-best time, clocking a 3:51.74.
The Spartans are off next week before returning to action on Feb. 12 at Christopher Newport.
