FAIRFAX, Va. – First-year sophomore Champagne Bell earned a first-place finish long jump and senior Tanisha Jenkins won the 60-meter hurdles to highlight the Spartan women's track team's efforts at the Father Diamond Invitational hosted by George Mason University on Saturday.
Bell leapt a season-best 18 feet, 8.75 inches to win the long jump. That bested her season-opening performance at the CNU Holiday Open last month by more than six inches. Teammate Ashanti Matthews placed second with a best effort of 18-3.
Jenkins topped the field in the 60 hurdles in a time of 9.01 seconds. That just edged out an athlete from George Mason in second, and NSU teammates Matthews (9.06) and Elaine Rhoades (9.09) in third and fourth, respectively.
The Spartans' other victory Saturday came via sophomore Kaleena Gray in the weight throw. She won gold with a best throw of 47-4.
Though she did not take first, senior Shanneka Claiborne turned in a solid effort in the 60 meters. She ran a time of 7.51 seconds in the finals to place second behind an unattached athlete.
The NSU 4x400 meter relay team capped the meet with a fourth-place finish (4:00.26).
The Spartan men compete next Saturday at the Doug Raymond Invitational hosted by Kent State.
