NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Shanneka Claiborne and Champagne Bell earned wins in the 200 meters and long jump, respectively, to pace the Spartan women's track team on Saturday at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport.
Claiborne won the 200 in a time of 25.21 seconds, while Bell posted her second-best long jump of the season (19 feet, 7 inches) to take first in that event.
NSU's field athletes also performed well in their final tuneup for the MEAC Indoor Championships. Wanetta Kirby, Jonee Artis and She'Anna Mitchell tied for second place in the high jump. They were the top three collegiate finishers in the event, which was won by an unattached athlete. All three cleared 5 feet, 3.75 inches.
Elsewhere, sophomore Kaleena Gray notched a personal-best in the weight throw. Her top effort of 51-0.25 earned her a third-place finish. Kirby also placed third in the long jump (17-6), Tanisha Jenkins was third in the triple jump (36-00.75) and Katie Wright was fourth in the pole vault, matching her PR of 11-3.75.
The Spartan women will compete for their second consecutive MEAC indoor crown this Thursday through Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
